Anode Rod Swap: The $40 Part That Saves Your Tank
Protect your Marietta water heater with a sacrificial anode rod. When and how to swap it, especially with Cobb County water.

What an anode rod does
Every tank-style water heater carries a long metal rod, usually magnesium, aluminum, or zinc, hung from the top. It is called a sacrificial anode. Its job is to corrode in place of the steel tank. As long as the rod is intact, the tank lining is protected. Once the rod is gone, the bare steel inside the tank starts pitting.
Why it matters in Marietta
Cobb County water is on the mild end at 3 to 5 grains per gallon, but the calcium and chlorine still chew a magnesium anode in 5 to 6 years. In a Salt Lake basin home that rod might last 3, in a coastal Florida home maybe 8. In Marietta you are in the middle, and most tanks in the 30060, 30062, or 30144 zips benefit from a rod check at year 4 and a swap at year 5.
How to check the rod
Cut power or gas, close the cold inlet, drain a few gallons. Find the hex head on top of the tank, sometimes hidden under an insulation cap. You need a 1-1/16 inch socket and a long breaker bar. If it is stuck, that is normal. A 4 foot cheater pipe usually breaks it loose, or call us and skip the bruised knuckles.
Magnesium vs aluminum vs powered
Magnesium gives the best protection but burns out fastest in any water with calcium. Aluminum lasts longer with slightly less protection, and can drop a bit of sediment. A powered (impressed-current) anode is permanent because it does not sacrifice itself. They run $250 to $400 installed. For most Marietta tanks past 5 years old, we usually recommend a powered anode if you want to keep the unit for the long haul.
Swap vs replace the tank
Tank under 8 years old and the anode is the only issue? Swap the rod. Tank past 10 years and the anode is gone? The steel walls are likely already pitted. A new rod will not undo that. At that point, plan for a full replacement and stop spending on a tank that is finished.
