    Reading water heater sounds

A quiet water heater is a healthy one. When yours starts making noise, it is telling you what is wrong. Below are six sounds we hear about every week from Marietta homes and what each one means.

    Pops or crackles

Steam bubbles bursting under a calcium layer on the tank floor. Common across Marietta because Cobb County water still drops minerals every cycle, even at 3 to 5 grains. A flush usually clears it. If the popping has run for a year or more, the tank floor may already be pitted.

    Rumbles

Same root cause as popping, but louder. Means the calcium layer is thicker and the bubbling is more violent. Your tank is overdue for a flush by a year or two.

    Ticks

Usually pipes expanding against framing as the system heats. Not dangerous. Insulating the lines or shifting them off contact points cuts it. If the tick is inside the tank, it is normally heat traps in the inlet or outlet nipples.

    Screeches or whistles

Restricted flow somewhere. First check the inlet shutoff. Then look at the T&P valve. A partly-closed valve whistles. A failing T&P often screeches and drips at the same time.

    Hammering

Water hammer, caused by fast-closing fixtures sending a pressure wave back at the heater. Hammer arrestors fix it. On a full replacement, an expansion tank is required by Georgia code in any closed-loop system, which is most Marietta homes on a pressure regulator.

    Hum on electric tanks

A hum on an electric unit is usually a loose heating element vibrating in the water. Tighten or swap it. Common on older electric tanks in homes near the Marietta Square.
